One of many abandoned crab traps removed on Saturday, Feb. 23rd. Pictured here is Port Director Mike Wilson helping out.

These things are not only trash and navigational hazards, but they are perpetual, wasteful killing machines. They keep naturally re baiting themselves and continue to fill with not only crabs but fish as well. There were probably a dozen large crabs in this one pulled from West Bay.

It's hard to think about how many of these are removed from Texas waters each year...tons of them, and to imagine how many crabs are simply wasted for nothing.

If you have it in you, try to help out with the next organized removal. It's not only a necessary and worthy effort, it's fun.

There's always one every year near you .
